While notable cities in the States draw upon their Italian immigrant heritage more than others, few would think to associate the City by the Bay with a sizable Italian influence. They, of course, would be wrong. The Paris of the West does indeed have a sizable Italian population centered in the Little Italy of North Beach.

While notable cities in the States draw upon their Italian immigrant heritage more than others, few would think to associate the City by the Bay with a sizable Italian influence. They, of course, would be wrong. The Paris of the West does indeed have a sizable Italian population centered in the Little Italy of North Beach.

Though navigating the seven square miles of public and private transportation might take more than a few minutes, the spirit and flavor of Italy abound. From the gelato at Caffe Roma to the cappuccino at Caffe Trieste, you are never far from a taste of Italy. And that taste is only minutes away from anywhere in San Francisco.

The North Beach neighborhood is bound by and provides access to Jackson Square, the Financial District (home of the famous Transamerica Pyramid), Chinatown, Russian Hill, and Fisherman's Wharf. And did I mention the food? Enjoy the ravioli at Fior d'Italia or the marinara at Kuleto's. On practically every street corner there are fabulous cafes and bistros to take in the unique sights and sounds of the city.

The neighborhood is made up of lively painted Victorians and three-story walk-ups. Though parking can be problematic, especially during the peak tourist season (May through August) if you are willing to pay your can be assured of find public parking structures. Just be prepared to do a bit of walking, or if you are only traveling with a mile or so, consider the MUNI rail or bus lines.

San Francisco has been a tourist destination for some time, during which it embraced a wide variety of immigrants from around the world. Like New York or Chicago or Boston, San Francisco has nurtured and celebrated pocket communities to its lasting renown. From Chinatown to North Beach, the City That Knows How certainly does.
