When you are familiar with the printing process there will come a time when you will want to have more control over the result. This is where burning-in and dodging comes to assist you. This method can be used with both the wet printing process as well as dry i.e. your photo editing program. However, this article focuses on the wet process.

Grab your digital camera and start snapping images of your place before the project begins. Hey I even documented my wife buried in catalogs, magazines, plans and books on the couch as she researched our kitchen remodel. She did not like the shot but in the end I think she will look back on it and laugh. After the bills have been paid I might add.

For example: 1. You can ask if you could take something off of the larger priced package to drop the price down a little. 2. Ask if you can get the package for a slightly lower price that way you don't have to sacrifice. 3. See if you can get a discount for making one lump sum payment instead of making a deposit and then incremental payments. 4. Don't be afraid to ask for a deal. The worst thing the photographer can say is no.

Be confident when you are asking for a discounted rate. Your posture and confidence level says a lot about you and just might be the winning factor for getting your budget wedding photography done at the price you can afford. Don't be willing to compromise with your style either. It's your day, and no one, including the venders should try to change your mind about what you want. You have been envisioning your wedding day since you were knee high to a grasshopper. Don't let anyone take your vision away from you.

Now I work out of my office in the house so when construction began it was an earful for sure. My wife works at a local hospital so she was lucky enough to miss the din each day, although she gets an earful at work from time to time. I am able to set a timer in my day to wander up in the back of the house and take the days images. I try to find a new detail of the construction to capture each day. My favorite day, although it was the loudest by far, was the day of demolition. My contractor brought in this delightful crew of guys who hail from Russia originally. They whacked and crashed my old kitchen to pieces all the while chatting each other up in Russian. They were efficient and fun guys who tore it up in record time and created a mountain of trash out back. I documented mount trashmore with my dog standing proudly on top with a quizzical look on his face.

Dodging and burning can achieve delicate control of exposure values and avoid obvious changes in the print. Too much burning-in may produce too many dark tones that are obviously not natural and burned edges become evident. Awkward or extreme dodging will also be quite apparent. Dodging and burning can make the difference between an average photograph and a dynamic photograph. It is an essential skill to acquire, as most photographs (especially outdoor) need some manipulation to provide a satisfactory tonal range.
