Small business owners have difficulty finding effective simple marketing techniques - usually because the 'simple' isn't! As usual, that doesn't become clear to you until after you've bought to 'simple' tools. Simple and easy isn't all of the time. Many business owners understand that marketing is critical to successful business. It's knowing how to find effective marketing tools and techniques.

Lets talk basics - Good and effective marketing is: 1. Finding a target audience 2. Finding out what the target audience wants 3. Giving/selling the target audience what it is that they want

Too many businesses, especially new and small businesses, dont know or appreciate the basics of marketing. At least, I know that I didnt and not knowing cost me plenty of money and stress as a result. Too often, small business owners start a business, develop a product or service, and then spend wasted time trying to find customers that want our products or services.

Basic marketing says that we should first find the target audience before we develop our products and services. Also, by first finding the target audience, we will also find out from them, what products and services they want (and are willing to buy). Piece of cake, right? Sure it is! Once you know!

Thats a very brief lesson on what marketing is. Knowing the why of marketing is a little more obvious. Keeping your business name in front of your customers is the major why of marketing. Big businesses such as McDonalds, Nike, Microsoft, etc. continuously demonstrate the value of marketing. They know what marketing is, the why of marketing, and the how of marketing.

Big business spends hundreds of millions of dollars on their marketing research. Obviously, small businesses dont have the advantage of hundreds of millions. But, we do have the advantage of using all of the high priced research of big business. For example, I study and replicate the marketing strategies of McDonalds in my small business efforts.

And as such, my marketing is repetitive, consistent and motivating. McDonald's messages don't even claim to sell hamburgers. They claim to "give us a break today" and "they love to see us smile" etc. And, of course, they are the #1 seller of hamburgers in the world.

Small business owners that take the initiative to learn the key basics of marketing help to ensure their future business success. The clearer that they are on this, the more control they will have of their business profits. In my opinion, understanding marketing basics determine business success or failure.

Effective simple marketing techniques have been hard for small businesses to find and to trust. But, if I have any advice to offer small business owners to avoid stress and embarrassment, I strongly urge them to do all that they can to learn the 'how' of simple marketing techniques.

Once again, I modeled my marketing efforts after McDonalds. There is a marketing rule that says customers must see your marketing message seven to nine times before they make a decision to buy. A business will have to promote their marketing message 27 times in order for their potential customers to see the messages seven to nine times.

Some industries require more marketing messaging, some don't require as much. Whatever the number of times, the message must be consistent and regular. Consistent and regular messaging builds relationships with customers and potential customers. Any size business that hopes to succeed must know this basic marketing principle

Marketing basics are just that: basic. But, it is critically important for every business owner to clearly recognize the need for marketing. And they must also know that effective marketing is not always the most costly marketing. Once you know the basics, for example, you can test all of the hyped easy-to-use simple marketing tools and know whether it will work for you or not.
